Kids in the Checkout Line - Why Earmarks Just Don't Work

Earmarks are like that candy display by the cash register that's designed to get your kids to beg you to spend one dollar more than you planned when you check out. Just one measly dollar - just one more thing. Now imagine you have 535 kids (number of Senators and Representatives), and each of them has countless specially interests. And a dollar at the check out line becomes a million, or a billion, or a trillion on Capitol Hill. Suddenly, that "one more little thing" before you check out becomes a monster all it's own. That's why no earmarks.
